Why choose a .BIKE domain?

In English the word means two quite different machines, and only context decides which. A bike is a bicycle. A bike is also a motorcycle. Those are not two flavours of one market: they are two markets with almost nothing in common — different customers, different prices, different law. Your first sentence has to say which one you are.

The bicycle shop

Sales, fitting, test rides, ranges, frame sizes. Fitting is what separates a proper shop from a chain store.

The workshop

Servicing, wheels, drivetrain, turnaround in high season. In spring the workshop wait is the only information anybody wants.

The motorcycle

Sales, servicing, tyres, winter storage, riding kit. The word covers this market too: say plainly which one is yours.

The ride

Group rides, ability levels, routes, meets. A shop that organises rides sells more than a shop that only sells.

Commuting

Utility bikes, electric assist, secure storage, riding in winter. The fastest-growing segment, and the one shops serve worst.

What it actually changes

• The word names two vehicles. Bicycle or motorcycle: context decides, but your first sentence should too.
• It reads in French as well. “Bike” circulates there without difficulty alongside “vélo”.
• No registration restrictions. No dealer or mechanic status to demonstrate to the registrar.
• It works as an email address too. workshop@harding.bike names the service before anyone writes.
