.MOVIE Domain Extension

Why choose a .MOVIE domain?

This is the audience’s word, not the trade’s. A production company is called “something Pictures”; nobody in the auditorium says that. They say they are going to see a movie, they ask whether you have seen it. That difference of register is the whole point of the extension: it addresses the people watching rather than the people making.

The film

An address for one title: synopsis, trailer, where to see it. A single-film site lives intensely for three months and becomes an archive.

The cinema

Times, versions, subtitles, access, cheaper days. The version — original, dubbed, subtitled — is what everybody is looking for.

Criticism

Analysis, lists, retrospectives, discoveries. Content that ages well: a review from 2015 still reads.

The festival

Programme, passes, venues, guests, added screenings. Ten days of intensity, then eleven months of preparation.

The audience

Film clubs, outdoor screenings, parent-and-baby showings. What fills a room today is rarely the film on its own.

What it actually changes

• It is the viewer’s word. That is what separates it from .pictures, the industry’s vocabulary for a century.
• It is understood in French. The word circulates there untranslated, alongside “film”.
• No registration restrictions. No producer or distributor status to demonstrate to the registrar.
• It works as an email address too. hello@thefestival.movie is easy to say, even read out on radio.
