Why choose a .HOST domain?

The word has two lives, and they meet. In computing, a host is the machine that serves: the one your files sit on, the one that answers when somebody asks for your site. In ordinary speech, a host is whoever receives — who opens the door and takes care of what is entrusted to them. Both senses say the same thing: something is kept at somebody else’s place. Which is precisely the trade.

The machine

Servers, where the data sits, redundancy, capacity. A technical client wants to know where the files physically are, and under which jurisdiction.

Whoever receives

The second sense: to welcome, to put somebody up, to take care. The human register of a trade too often presented as purely technical.

Availability

Real uptime, past incidents, a public status page. Publishing your outages earns more trust than promising never to have one.

Four letters

Short, no spelling to explain, identical in French. An address said over the phone without spelling anything out.

The registry

Radix also runs .site and .website — and its own site is a .website. A registry that uses its own extensions, which is less common than you would expect.

What it actually changes

• It names the machine, not the service. That is what separates it from .hosting, which names the ongoing activity and the contract with it.
• The two senses reinforce each other. Server and host say the same thing: keeping at your place what belongs to somebody else.
• No registration restrictions. No hosting business status to demonstrate to the registrar.
• It works as an email address too. support@harding.host states the trade before the message is opened.
